Derek was born Derek William Rapp on 11 April 1933 in Bow, East London, to Christina (née Jarvis) and William “Bill” Rapp. Before becoming an actor, he worked as a professional gambler, motor racer, meat‑market porter, and debt collector. He also undertook national service in the Royal Air Force.
With a career spanning more than five decades, he began as a stuntman before moving into acting, appearing in a range of British television roles including the crime dramas Law & Order (1978) and King and Castle (1985–1988), before taking on his most prominent role of Charlie Slater in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, which he portrayed from 2000 to 2011, with brief appearances in 2013 and 2016.
He died on 10 January 2026 (92).
